Biography

The road to the first Sons of Ken album has been a long and hilariously bumpy one, starting somewhere around the end of the 1990s and taking in digressions into Rave, Trip-Hop, Hip House, and Old School Funk before a long hiatus took Spike and Michael out of music through the mid-2000s. The duo emerged from hibernation in May 2023, picking up favourable reviews from Q Magazine, Mojo and Electronic Sound for their quirkily retro-futuristic take on electro funk. The band’s best-received single, Disco Sucks, took its inspiration from the notorious 1979 Disco Demolition Night and cheekily fashioned it into a Nu-Disco belter that brought a smile to the face of everyone who heard it. The band’s first six singles were described, variously as “Bootsy Collins working with Fatboy Slim,” a “looser Daft Punk,” & “punky, disco-pop cheese.” That eclectic and eccentric mix carries through into Sons Of Ken’s first long -player: We Are The Kens.
