King Williams Town-born (Clubview), the Johannesburg-based Deep House DJ and producer, Bongani Nombamba, a.k.a. Bourer The Funk got swept up by the Deep House steam train back in the early 2000s. Harking back to his younger years, with fond memories as a teen, armed with just a walkman and a collection of deep house mix cassettes in his backpack, it is fair to say not many discover their passions quite as early as Bourer. It wasn’t long into his teenage years before he’d develop an insatiable thirst for crate-digging — flipping through cd after cd picking out the dancefloor gems that would further ignite his passion for music. With an open mind and fierce curiosity for anything and everything electronic music-based, he has spent the past two decades soaking up a multitude of house sub-genres and styles ranging from Chicago House, UK Garage, Electro and hip-hop. Artists like Louie Vega, DJ Christos, DJ Ganyani, Vinny Da Vinci, Terry Hunter and the Legendary Frankie Knuckles are just some of the musicians that influenced Bourer The Funk into the tastemaker he is today. Today, Bourer The Funk focuses on pushing an infectious fusion of Deep Soulful House and Nu Jazz. With recent releases such as Connection, Alone and Tears, you’ll be hard-pressed to argue for a lack of diversity within his production, which comprises of both his own productions and collaborations. His tracks go from the deeper end of downtempo and breaks through to the tougher grooves of house and jazz.
