Hiraeth Bokyo 望郷 is an underground emo rap artist who hails from the quiet New Forest town of Lymington, Hampshire, United Kingdom. His stage name combines the Welsh word “hiraeth”, which means a longing for a home that no longer exists or never was, and the Japanese word “bokyo”, which means nostalgia or homesickness. His music reflects his sense of nostalgia for the 90s, especially the anime, arcades and split-screen gaming culture that he grew up with. Hiraeth Bokyo 望郷 uploaded his songs on SoundCloud and YouTube, where he gained a loyal fanbase who appreciated his raw and emotional lyrics, his melodic and distorted vocals, and his lo-fi and trap beats. He soon became part of the online emo rap community, collaborating with many artists like Chris Bey, Cold Hart, Sadzilla, ONI INC. and many more. Over the years, Hiraeth Bokyo 望郷 has evolved his sound from emo rap to alternative pop with a blend of electronic music. He has experimented with different genres and influences, such as indie rock and vaporwave. He has also incorporated more elements from Japanese culture, such as anime samples, vocaloid, and kawaii aesthetics.
