Biography

While TAMAT means ‘the end’ in Indonesian, for Melbourne based artist Young Ha Kim, it marks the beginning of his deep dive into music. Influenced by the sounds of Beach House, Yo La Tengo, Chromatics and Portishead, TAMAT sits on the edge of Indie Pop genre. Born into an immigrant family in Indonesia, Young’s parents traveled far from their hometowns and settled in Medan, a town so foreign it was hard to forge a sense of belonging to. He recalls memories of his family singalongs accompanied by strumming of melancholic tunes and lyrics on struggles and homesickness. This bittersweet sentiment had subconsciously shaped the sounds he seeks comfort and solace growing up, subsequently transforming into a distinct influence for his music. His second single, Hollow, explores a bittersweet emotion akin to one he grew up with. It lends a nostalgia not only to a heartbreak, but the better days that came along before it. It grasps you with a uniquely upbeat yet dreamy melody, poignant at times. Young describes the feeling as being in a dance hall aboard a foreign ship, dancing alone under a fluorescent light with no cares of the world. Outside of music, TAMAT is a photographer whose fascination surrounds the banality of life. His curiosity for the everyday and emotions they come with reverberates through his music. It embodies all emotions that is part and parcel of life, whether uplifting or dreary, and somewhat comfortably familiar - a nostalgia for a time you’ve never known.
