Biography

As a composer, Fred Stoyva values eclecticism, but with a through line of thematic, programmatic writing. Sometimes, as in his latest release ‘Evoke’, a colourful palette of slowly changing harmonies and repeated rhythmic motifs are employed to evoke different emotions, colours and other sensations, this time with a backdrop of nature as it changes from warm autumn colours to face the dark embrace of winter. ‘Evoke’ is his first foray into post/neo classical music for solo piano. Currently based in London, Fred started out in music as a classical pianist. Throughout his childhood and teenage years he performed in and around his home county in western Norway. During his studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music he switched focus to composing, following in the footsteps of his father, Njål, who is also a composer. In 2017 he released the tone poem ‘Castle on the Lake’ about a journey down a river to the eponymous castle on the lake and the ghosts within, and in 2018 the single ‘Year of the Dog’. He is currently working on getting his short operetta ‘Primo Tempo’ recorded, an EP of bossa nova inspired easy listening music, composing a Chinese ballad and a followup to ‘Year of the Dog’, and having a short surf rock/ye-ye song produced in French.
