Biography

(m)ORPH is an unconventional, unexpected process to remix artist’s music in a 3D VR environment using 360-degree spatial audio and physics attributes. The output from this innovative process is a realtime “mix performance” creating a custom binaural version of a band’s song. Created by audio technologist and electronic music composer Kasson Crooker (Symbion Project, Elyxr), the (m)ORPH project is an experimental brand-new process to mix music. (m)ORPH reinvents the traditional mix process using binaural HRTF spatial audio to place sounds virtually all around the listener (headphones required), using distance-based mixing to handle loudness (just like the real world), and using a custom-built VR environment with audio tracks literally floating in space and with physics attributes (velocity, reflection, spatial orientation). These unique 3D components create organic, unexpected mixes in real time, similar to how a conductor and orchestra interact. The (m)ORPH Artist Series will be an ongoing release of long-form songs in the domains of ambient, experimental, drone, noise, and other uncategorizable musical genres, through collaborations with a diverse set of electronic artists. The name (m)ORPH comes from the art movement Orphism (1912-15) which was focused on producing art that was about pure form and sensation and "existence of an infinitude of interrelated states of being" ~ abstraction in its purest form. The (m) is interchangeable as music, motion, morphing, mutation.
