Biography

Mae McKenna is a contemporary Scottish singer/songwriter specialising in Celtic and roots music. She was lead singer with Scottish Folk Rock band, Contraband, and contributed an acclaimed performance on their eponymous 1973 Album which was followed by 3 solo albums on the Transatlantic label. During the 80s she became one of the UK’s top session singers, backing Kylie Minogue, Ian Dury, The Cult, Rick Astley, Westlife, ABC, Dead or Alive, Pete Townsend and Ultravox among others. She was a soloist on the movies Nanny McPhee, The River Queen and The Rocket Post theme which she also co-wrote. In 1988, McKenna returned to her own music with the self produced Celtic, New Age “Nightfallers” on Virgin’s Venture label. The album was well received as a pioneer album in the field. Mirage & Reality covered similar territory and in 1999, she recorded the folk roots album, Shore to Shore, in Nashville and Edinburgh, exploring the shared musical roots of Scotland, Ireland and Appalachia. Mae’s musical family includes brother Hugh and cousin Ted of SAHB and son, singer/songwriter Jamie Woon.
