Antônio Carlos Borges-Cunha is a Brazilian composer, conductor, and a professor of the Department of Music at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as one of the founders of the Master’s and Doctorate programs in music composition. His music has aroused the interest of musicians, researchers, visual artists and listeners with diverse cultural backgrounds. Borges-Cunha has presented his compositions in several countries of the Americas and Europe. He has received awards for his compositions and for his contributions as orchestra conductor, in addition to his research accomplishments. His music has been the subject of academic research. The integration of opposing cultural and aesthetic values and the realization of dialogues between music, poetry and visual arts are characteristics of his work. InstalaSom (1989), a collaborative project with the visual artist, Maia Mena Barreto, focuses mainly on approximating Western culture to Brazilian indigenous traditions. Celso Loureiro Chaves wrote: “InstalaSom may be summarized as an abstract evocation of nature through idyllic landscapes that hide sadness and tension”.
