Biography

Helen MacKinnon is a contemporary classical composer from Scotland, whose celebrated choral music has been performed and aired across Europe, Asia, the United States and Africa. Helen's a cappella setting of Gloria in excelsis Deo was awarded in the 2nd International Competition of Choral Composition Ennio Morricone 2015 as part of Florence International Choral Festival. The award-winning work now features as a Modern and Contemporary repertoire piece in Florence Choral Festivals. In 2017, Prague Mixed Chamber Choir recorded the work as part of a compilation of choral works 'Voices of Earth & Air Vol.II' released by Navona Records in April 2019. Helen's setting was described as "spectacular writing for voices" (Music of our Mothers, WFCF). Helen has a large portfolio of sacred choral music, including a full mass in Latin 'Mass for the Spirit' and 'Ave Maris Stella' for string orchestra and soprano, which premiered with Subotiča Filharmonja in Serbia in 2019. In 2021 Helen recorded her orchestral work, 'The Rinns of Islay' a musical journey around the Scottish island that is part of her heritage, with the RSNO, conducted by David Watkin. The work was released on the album Legends and Light Vol 2 released by Navona Records in January 2022 and awarded a Silver Medal in the Global Music Awards.
