What It Was

Biography

Philly-born, Berlin-based rapper and beatmaker Koncept Sparkz makes modern boom bap. Early underground releases with Asylum7 and their band Synthesis featured jazz-inflected beats and carefree rhymes capturing the youthful energy of late 90s cyphers and basement house parties. The first Sparkz single “Turn It Up” was a B-Side with Brooklyn mainstay J.Bless. Released by My Favorite Things, a label spun out of the famed Rude Movements club night, the self-produced track made clever use of Fela Kuti’s “Water Get No Enemy'' and became an independent dance floor favorite around the world. After more than a decade in the shadows, Sparkz is back with his debut EP “Deadline.” The self-produced 5-track release is the solo outing spawn of 2020’s lockdown. Sparkz weaves wordplay over his own throwback beats, with longtime collaborator DJ Clutch adding classic scratching.
