Biography

Techno artist Pom Pom has managed to maintain total anonymity since first appearing on the scene in the early 2000s. With few exceptions, nearly all of the project's releases have appeared in Spinal Tap-style pitch-black sleeves on the artist's eponymous label, distinguishable only by catalog number. While the project's identity is unknown, Kompakt's Wolfgang Voigt has mentioned that the records are made by someone from Berlin record shop Space Hall. Pom Pom's music ranges from brutal minimalism to trippy, dub-influenced ambient techno, occasionally marked with the presence of distorted yet recognizable samples (such as Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" or Tiga's cover of "Sunglasses at Night"). While mainly releasing vinyl EPs, Pom Pom put out its first full-length compact disc, CD 001, in 2008 and began an association with Ostgut Ton starting with 2018's Untitled EP. Pom Pom's first four EPs all appeared in 2001. The artist pumped out several numerically titled 12"s a year for most of the decade, venturing outside of its self-titled label to release several split EPs with the equally mysterious Burnel between 2003 and 2006. While most of the releases were vinyl, 13 was issued as a cassette in 2003. Following 31 in 2007, Pom Pom released CD 001 and double-LP 32 in 2008. Two additional double-disc vinyl releases, 33 and 34, appeared in 2010. Following a few years of silence, two Pom Pom Ltd 12"s appeared in 2013. A Pom Pom track appeared on Giegling's Mind Over Matter compilation in 2016, leading to speculation of a connection between the project and the equally elusive Traumprinz. Two Pom Pom CDs appeared in 2017, and among several self-issued releases in 2018, the artist released Untitled on Ostgut Ton, having previously performed at the associated Berlin techno club Berghain. Ostgut Ton's A-Ton imprint released Untitled II in 2019. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
