Biography

Rikalet is a South African composer, contralto singer-songwriter, pianist and lyricist. She takes the listener on a rich and colourful sound journey exploring various moods and textures in her music. Growing up in South Africa, and having travelled a lot working on cruise ships previously, she draws inspiration for her music and lyrics from a culturally diverse and colourful canvas, fusing an array of musical styles. Her lyrics explore a variety of existential themes, many can relate to. She was always surrounded by music growing up and started playing piano by ear from the age of 5. A curious multi-instrumentalist, always strongly relying on her creativity, she continued to pursue classical and jazz studies, currently focusing on piano, voice, acoustic guitar and organ bass synth. Her first EP - Mother Tongue - released in 2019, explore elements of jazz, blues, dark folk, gypsy jazz, reggae and cabaret. During the 2020 lockdown, she started a new dream pop side project, Wasabi Club, with her husband Matthew de Lange and they are currently in studio, recording their first EP, Kintsugi. Her next EP, 'Dreamtime', and full album, 'Tourmaline', are both scheduled for release in the form of singles over the course of 2022.
