It is refreshing to know that the career of singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Gyedu-Blay Ambolley from Ghana appears to be on a roll. Reissues of his old albums, ongoing live-tours and new recordings are keeping the veteran - born in 1947 in Sekondi, Ghana, in the public eye. Ambolley is vocally masterful and an oustanding leader of his super tight Sekondi Band. Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is sometimes referred to as the ‘James Brown' of Ghana. And not without reason. With his deep and groovy Afrofunk sound, that he called Simigwa-do, he exploded on the Ghanaian music scene in 1973. His concoction of highlife, funk, jazz, soul and proto-rap was - and still is - exhilarating.
