Biography

Pianist Robert Thies enjoys a diverse career as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and recording artist. He has already performed 40 different concerti with orchestras all over the world, including the Saint Petersburg (RUSSIA) Philharmonic, Auckland Philharmonia, Louisville Orchestra, and the Mexico City Philharmonic. He first captured worldwide attention in 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the only American pianist to win a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn's triumph in Moscow in 1958. In Los Angeles, Robert has worked and recorded with many top film composers, including John Williams, James Newton Howard, James Horner, Danny Elfman, and Mychael Danna. His playing has been featured in the Showtime series, Penny Dreadful, and such films as Fracture, Concussion, and the Oscar-winning film score to The Life of Pi. In February 2006 Robert released a Classical/Jazz crossover CD Difference with the Croatian flutist, Damjan Krajacic. In 2012 with Krajacic, he began a series of improvisational acoustic/ambient albums, under the title Blue Landscapes. A third album, Blue Landscapes III: Frontiers caught the attention of a record label, and will be released this coming Fall with Real Music. His solo debut album of original jazz-oriented compositions Life Around Us is due for release in 2020. Read more at: www.robertthies.org
