Biography

Initial music lessons for this young Swede were given by H.P. Johnsen in thoroughbass and piano. He studied mathematics and instrument making in Copenhagen. Far after his return to Stockholm, 1772, he was able to study composition with Kraus and Abbe Vogler. Between 1772 and 1781 Wikmanson was the organist of the Dutch Reformed Church and in 1781 he became the organist at Storkyrkan Cathedral where he assisted in rebuilding the organ during the 1790s. By 1788 he was elected a member of the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music, director of education, 1796, and teacher of harmony and music, 1797. His most important contribution to music was his translation of works by Tartini and by Vogler. Wikmanson's music was influenced not only by his friend and teacher Kraus but also by Haydn, C.P.E. Bach and Johann Schobert. Wikmanson was an accomplished instrumentalist who was versed on the organ, piano, viola, and cello. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
