Biography

Mount Royal Kantorei is the flagship adult chorus of the Conservatory at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada. We are a mixed-voice, auditioned choir, comprised of up to 80 members from all walks of life. We marked our 25th anniversary of making exceptional music in 2020. Under the leadership of Artistic Director John Morgan, the choir is adding members and has been attracting ever-growing in-person and online audiences. Our repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, with a special focus on Canadian composers such as Eleanor Daley, Ruth Watson Henderson, and Imant Raminsh. Performances are usually held in the stunning Bella Concert Hall at Mount Royal University, where wonderful acoustics showcase the choir’s clear, rich harmonies. Highlights include Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass and Karl Jenkins’ Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, both in collaboration with the Calgary Youth Orchestra, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”), with the Calgary Civic Symphony. Kantorei has also collaborated with the Kenyan Boys Choir, Spiritus Chamber Choir, and the Calgary Men’s Chorus. Kantorei has also performed and collaborated internationally, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall (Arvo Part’s Berliner Mass) and the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin (Karl Jenkin’s Armed Man: A Mass for Peace).
