ABOVE THE TREE: Marco Bernacchia is an experimental musician and visual artist from Italy. Following formative years in which he learnt to play the saxophone and the electric guitar, Bernacchia studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino. Since completing his studies Bernacchia has collaborated on numerous projects and played in several bands, including GALLINA, AL:ARM!, Virtual Forest, Stregoni, Lay Llamas and M.A.Z.C.A. As an artist Bernacchia has also participated in various international exhibitions, most notably the Venice Biennale. His most enduring solo music project, Above The Tree, has been active since 2006, with a debut release entitled ‘Blue Revenge’ emerging in 2007. Since then Bernacchia has toured extensively across Europe, and, to date, has released twelve records on a wide range of international labels, including the Boring Machines imprint. A project with a multifaceted complexion, Above The Tree fuses folkloric elements with avant-garde experimentation, whilst drawing on noise, primeval blues and African tribal music. With a striking live show characterized by interactive performance and a mythological disguise embodied by a handcrafted ‘rooster mask’, Above The Tree represents a continually evolving vision of conceptual outsider music.
