Biography

Over six years since any music last surfaced, L-Vis 1990 is back. Co-founder of Night Slugs – one of the UK’s defining dance labels of the last 15 years – alongside Bok Bok, James Connolly’s L-Vis 1990 moniker played an integral role in introducing audiences to a melting pot of hyper-specific club sounds. Through the label’s Club Constructions series and a run of phenomenal club 12”s in the early 2010s – Lil Silva’s ‘Night Skanker’, Girl Unit’s ‘Wut’, Bok Bok’s ‘Southside’ EP, L-Vis 1990’s ‘Ballads’ and Jam City’s ‘Classical Curves’ LP to name a few – L-Vis 1990 & Night Slugs’ alchemistic blueprint helped redefine the possibilities of UK club music. “I stopped doing L-Vis back in 2018 because I was so sick of cyclical trends at the time and I wanted to see what I could do if I put all of my efforts into house music with the Dance System project”, says Connolly. “But I never overlooked the cultural significance of what we were doing, and how that impacts dance music in the UK even now. We set the blueprint.” In his time working under his harder, faster house alias, Dance System, has opened Connolly’s eyes to the instant-grat consumption habits of the modern music ecosystem. “It’s just been getting faster and more ridiculous … and for me, it’s really not interesting”, Connolly says. “This coming year, I want to get off this fast-moving UK dance music locomotive train and find my own track. And that’s why I think it’s the right time to bring L-Vis back.”
