Like most Chicagoans, Suburban Kid McFly proudly represents his neighborhood. A Filipino-American raised in the north shore suburbs of the city, he found music to be the best tool to express his identity and elevate the voice of his community in a genre where Filipinos are largely underrepresented. Formerly a member of Chicago’s rap duo RETROSPECT, SKMF started his solo career under his original moniker Quotes. His first solo EP titled Suburban Kid McFly dropped in 2017. Immediately following this first release, he partnered with his brother/producer Matt Audio Dope. This partnership inspired a new direction for SKMF, resulting in a more vulnerable and timeless sound than his previous braggadocious raps. His second EP SKMF2 dropped in 2018, along with his new identity as Suburban Kid McFly. Fueled by this new sound and direction, SKMF quickly followed up this second EP with a full length project in 2019, Grass is Greener. Grass is Greener is a full experiment with the sound and color fully produced, mixed and mastered by his brother Matt Audio Dope. SKMF drew conceptual inspiration from the likes of NERD and Tyler, the Creator throughout the project, but he continued to drive toward his own sound. Just like his mindset towards fashion, SKMF did not want to do what everyone else was doing. While his plan is to continue to promote “Grass Is Greener,” SKMF is already creating more music to gear up for another project with Matt Audio Dope in 2020.
