“Something special to honor the city— something special for the future” - with this goal established in the opening track of his latest album, “FOR THE FUTURE”, Jay Screw enters the limelight boldly. But after a thorough listen to the album, or the handful of singles he has released surrounding it, it’s easy to see that he has already began to pave the way to accomplishing this goal. The album features clever fusions between psychedelic trap and Southern Hip-Hop culture (as embodied nowhere better than his name, being a direct homage to the Houston legend DJ Screw), and boasts an impressive overarching concept, exploring the way the world around Screw has changed with time, and speculating as to what the future may hold for him. And since this album, Jay Screw has only continued to develop his one-of-a-kind style. Whether it be in the dreamy, ethereal soundscape of “FALLBACK”, or the grand victory lap that is “HIGHER”, he proves to consistently explore his potential. And while his releases thus far have certainly demonstrated promise, given his rapid evolution, the best for this young Houston rapper still clearly has yet to come.
