Seattle-based Brakebill, aka Sam Brakebill-Hacke, continues to explore themes of loss, family, and a search for connection that has always been central to his music. Though his sound has developed conceptually over time, Brakebill’s self-produced releases consistently draw on personal narratives that are compelling as they are poignant. Originally from Rochester, MN, Brakebill started playing music at basement shows at 15 with instruments his mom bought by scraping together everything she had. “I’ve always known I wanted to make music -- it was the only thing I could put all my energy towards but was also fulfilling and fun for me. I’ve never wanted to do anything else.” He made the move to Seattle in 2012 and since then has been focused on evolving his sound, working collaboratively with other young local artists like DoNormaal, Wolftone, AJ Suede, and Raven Hollywood. Brakebill’s 2016 album Hiding Places spoke on coping mechanisms and fear of loss, while his most recent full-length album Out the Window explores the concept of acceptance with a continuation of his profoundly personal lyricism. Stylistically, Out the Window employs more layered harmonies held together with the strong emotional undercurrent in his production and vulnerable, ruminating vocals. Taking cues from artists like Maxo Kream, Shlohmo, Clams Casino, and MadeinTYO, Brakebill captures vivid emotions to tell real, raw stories from his life.
