Biography

A French trouvere who is attributed with a number of songs. It is likely that the Chastelain belonged to a formidable family, so much so that he was thought to be the hero of a particular French story ("Roman du Chastelain de Courci et de la Dame de Fayel"). The Chastelain was associated with poets who served during the third and fourth crusade and chasons attributed to him from these times were used by others in later songs. The conventions employed by the Chastelain were common-place with the exception of a reflective pathos and suavity. Meters were balanced and usually written in the context of ten syllables per line. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
