David Virelles has been hailed by Chucho Valdés as "the most advanced of our pianists" and as "the new school" by Gilles Peterson. Born in a musical family, Virelles was classically trained at the Santiago conservatory and was also surrounded by many types of music from an early age. Eventually, he discovered Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and would become fascinated by the seeming connections between this music and that from his birthplace. Having studied in Toronto after an invitation by Jane Bunnett, he moved to New York in 2009. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation. He has worked with Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Threadgill, Paul Motian, Andrew Cyrille, Mark Turner, Ravi Coltrane, Marcus Gilmore and Román Díaz. Named Rising Star by DownBeat, Virelles is also a Shifting Foundation Fellow and has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Louis Applebaum Composers Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. He is the recipient of the first Oscar Peterson Prize, presented by Peterson himself. David’s releases have continuously ended up on many “Best Of The Year” lists: Continuum (Pi), Mbóko, Antenna, and Gnosis (ECM) and his latest, The Singer's Grove (El Tivoli Music/ Pi). The album features Cuban music legends and it was recorded at the Siboney E.G.R.E.M. Studios. https://davidvirelles.bandcamp.com/album/igb-al-ko-rin-the-singer-s-grove-vol-i-and-ii
