Carreño studied at the National School of Music and served as professor of theory at the José Angel Lamas School for advanced music studies in Caracas. He also worked as a hornist and choirmaster for the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, which he also sometimes conducted. His best known works are the orchestral pieces Suite margariteña (1954) and Sinfonieta satirica (1965).
