Melanin

Biography

GOODSTEPH is a Detroit based artist with special focus on music, writing and sound. The musical fabric of his life began on Detroit’s Eastside, where his sister would give him mixtapes with songs from TLC, Jill Scott, KEM and Alicia Keys. From there, GOODSTEPH made it his mission to develop his skills through piano and vocal lessons, choir, and later in his college studies. His debut music project Mela.nin is an honest musical portrait of his life that features original lyrics, poetry, and music production. This 15-track extended EP landed him a spot in City Arts Magazine’s Best New Artist issue in 2017 and a performance at Upstream Music Festival. In addition to his performance efforts, he has done notable sound design work with Intiman Theatre's Emerging Artist Program, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (Book-It Rep), Milk Like Sugar (ArtsWest), Hedwig & The Angry Inch, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (Artswest) and many other theatre and movement pieces. GOODSTEPH plans to use his artistry to encourage growth and empowerment in marginalized communities first, in hopes to one day create a more healthy, human dwelling place for all.
