Rainstorm Brother is the elemental post-rock-inflected cinematic freak-folk of John Isaac Watters and Tyler Chester. The new sound is the perfect amalgamation of solo artist Watters' pensive, spare acoustic numbers and producer/keyboardist Chester's deep, dreamy soundscapes. Together, they build impressive structures from immaterial forms—emotions, memories, sadness. Through years of experimentation they've found a way to realize monumental architectural works in song; the compositions span epochs in three-to-five minutes while remaining as approachable as pop. The EP’s opening track, "Drivin," begins with reverberating guitar and Watters' deep, tremulous voice. "Maybe I've been living in the daylight a little too long / Maybe I've been growing blind to the shadows,” Watters sings. “You got that terminal sadness but you never let on / I could've carried you along if you'd asked me." "I didn't realize it at the time I wrote it, but I think it's about a friend who committed suicide,” Watters says. “A person who was successful and as a result was hiding his mental illness. In a way, it's about how I could've been there for him if I'd known, and how friends carry each other's suffering." With its tempo changes, acoustic jangle and an instantly memorable sing-along chorus, "Drivin'" becomes the vehicle by which Rainstorm Brother carries away sadness.
