Jazz is a musical genre, born in the mid-nineteenth century in the United States, which expanded globally throughout the entire twentieth century. Its beginning is somewhat peculiar: slaves of African origin, living in southern parts of the United States, used to express their traditions by playing different types of drums and singing. Due to the law restricting this usual routine, they resorted to percussion by clapping their hands and beating their feet to enjoy their parties and their music. However, the ban was not enforced in the so-called Place Congo in New Orleans, where slaves were free to gather, sing and accompany themselves on real craft percussion instruments. Even so, jazz not only had an influence on the traditional music of these people.
