Biography

Wim Hoogewerf received his musical training at the National Superior Conservatory of Amsterdam, and studied the guitar in Dick Visser’s class. He perfected himself with Oscar Cacérès and Betho Davezac in Paris, as well as with Per-Olof Johnson at the RoyalConservatory of Copenhagen. His studies lead Wim to settle in Paris in 1980. Teaching the guitar at the conservatoire, he leads as well a concert career, playing with numerous prestigious orchestras such as the Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Ensemble Erwartung, the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam or the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. He has been invited as soloist within ensembles in many festivals ( Gaudeamus Festival, the Venice Sonopolis...) Besides the classical repertoire, Wim Hoogewerf is frequently invited to play contemporary creations and his repertoire includes numerous composers such as Ambrosini, Louis Andriessen, Kees Arntzen, Berio, Bussotti, Carrillo, Carter, Cisternino, Criton, Giacometti, Alois Haba, Ton De Leeuw, Miroglio, Murail, Ohana, Scelsi, Takemitsu, Tippett, Van Oosten, Visser. This is how he has taken part in concerts by the ensembles 2 E2M, ASKO, Alternance, IRCAM, playing at Carnegie Hall and at the American Festival of microtonal music. Wim frequently escapes from the classical universe to play the electric guitar, the banjo and the mandolin; he also plays the sitar with his master Jamaluddin Bhartya within an Indian music circle and is seduced by the sound of Munir Bashir’s Arabic lute.
