Biography

Bisco Smith (aka Bisc1) is a Brooklyn-based rapper and graffiti artist. Over the 2000s, through his work as a club DJ and well-received mixtapes, EPs, and albums and artwork, Bisc1 gained renown in New York's underground hip-hop and art scene. He came to New York from Connecticut at age 18. He released The Basics EP in 2006, followed by the 2007 mixtape, The Stay Up Project. By 2008, after his single "Turbulence," from When Electric Night Falls, started gaining traction, Bisc1 began receiving nation-wide recognition, including features in urban magazines The Source and Skunk. He released The Broadcast in 2010. Bisc1's sound is congruous with that of his underground New York City peers, with insular lyrics atop claustrophobic production. Fellow hip-hop artists started noticing Bisc1's graphic art, which led to work with artists from Murs to El-P to Aesop Rock. He's done cover art, designed promotional materials, and spearheaded art direction for labels such as Definitive Jux, Ninja Tune, and others. In 2009, in conjunction with the release of When Electric Night Falls, Bisc1 toured the U.S., performing at popular festivals like South by Southwest and Scribble Jam, where he shared stages with the likes of KRS-One and Jeru the Damaja. ~ Vincent Thomas, Rovi
