SML is an improvisatory supergroup consisting of five musicians from the Los Angeles indie, jazz, and experimental music scenes. Their 2024 debut, Small Medium Large, was based on recordings edited down from down from lengthy improvisation sessions held at the now-shuttered venue ETA, stylistically recalling Krautrock and Afrobeat as well as post-punk and ambient techno. Bassist Anna Butterss, synthesizer artist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, drummer/percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann make up the group SML. Butterss and Johnson played in a quartet with guitarist Jeff Parker, frequently performing at the Los Angeles venue ETA. The five musicians performed several improvisatory shows at ETA, which were recorded in stereo by Bryce Gonzales, then edited and mixed using additional home recordings by the musicians.
