Biography

Cicero Blake was a prominent figure in the Chicago soul scene, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. His musical journey began with the Golden Tones, a group that would later evolve into the iconic Kool Gents. After leaving the Golden Tones, Blake embarked on a solo career, recording for several small Chicago labels including Ernie and George Leaner's Mar-V-Lus and Monk Higgins' Sack Records. His early work, though not widely recognized at the time, would later gain appreciation among Northern Soul enthusiasts. A turning point in his career came in 1967 when he recorded two tracks for Brunswick Records: "You Got Me Walking" and "A Woman Needs to Be Loved." These tracks, however, were shelved for two decades before resurfacing on Kent Records' release The Soul of a Man. Throughout his career, Blake continued to perform and record, balancing his musical pursuits with a day job as a commissioner for the Maywood Park Districts. His contributions to the Chicago soul scene have solidified his legacy as a beloved and respected artist.
