From reflective, pensive explorations to joyous, playful outbursts with roots deep in the jazz tradition, the current iteration of Mathias Landæus’ trio have been inspiring audiences with their highly imaginative output for more than 8 years now. With a web of influences that stretch from Ornette Coleman and Paul Bley, to Messiaen and Bill Evans, bandleader Mathias has been a leading figure on the Swedish jazz scene for 3 decades, bringing together like-minded musicians around both music and social activism. Indeed, when bassist Johnny Åman joined the trio more than a decade ago, drummer Cornelia Nilsson - the most recent addition - was a high school student in the audience. Still only in her early thirties, the 2024 Ben Webster Prize-winner's recent rise to prominence is perhaps testament to both Landaeus's awareness of the scene, and the level the trio demands of itself. Their imaginative live shows prioritise intuition over setlists and a freedom to play which could just as easily see them intertwine their original music with a jazz standard, a pop tune, or some warped Strauss. The thing that ties it all together? A deep connection to the audience, to the history of jazz and, ultimately, to each other. “a pianist of deep emotional intensity working with fluid, dense colors and twisted phrasing, all leading into a forest of delight.” StereoTimes
