Brooklyn's Super Yamba Band comprises a unique blend of inspiration born of 70s/80s West-African Afrobeat and Psychedelic Funk, with a live energy that moves everyone in the room to dance. The band formed in 2014 and quickly made a name for themselves performing in clubs in Harlem and hosting their own DIY dance parties at a loft space in Brooklyn. In 2017 Super Yamba formed a collaboration with Afrobeat legend Leon Ligan-Majek better known as Kaleta. The longtime guitarist for Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade hit it off right away with the members of Super Yamba after being struck by their compositions that were influenced by the music he grew up on in Benin and Nigeria. Kaleta & Super Yamba Band immediately started gigging around New York City and touring the United States before eventually releasing their debut LP titled Médaho in 2019 under the California indie label Ubiquity Records. Médaho received much acclaim including “Best Albums of Summer 2019” on Bandcamp and a sync license from ABC/Hulu for the show High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz. All the while, members of Super Yamba have honed their crafts performing with a diverse range of artists such as David Byrne, Rubblebucket, Yeasayer and Sinkane to name a few. They have worked with several other African vocalists including Osei Korankye and Ismael Kouyate. Another milestone for the band was their performance at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem in 2019.
