I was born in Machynlleth, mid-Wales, in 1951, but I’ve lived since 1978 on Anglesey, an island whose history, mythology and landscape have been important influences on my work as a composer. My compositions have been commissioned and played by eminent orchestras, ensembles, singers and bands, and one of my specialisms is writing and arranging pieces which can be performed by players of many different abilities simultaneously. These multi-ability pieces are now used by orchestras worldwide, and one such arrangement, of Elgar’s 'Nimrod', opened the 2012 London Olympic Games. I’ve composed prolifically for television drama for over 40 years, including the soundtrack for 'Madam Wen' for the Welsh Film board, S4C’s first full-length movie. 2017 saw the première and tour of my Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd (A Week in a Future Wales), a commissioned full-length opera in the Welsh language – the first of its kind to be composed for over a century; my second opera, Un Nos Ola Leuad (One Moonlit Night) is currently in mid-production as a television film for Channel 4. My music is widely streamed and downloaded on Spotify and similar platforms, and has been broadcast on the BBC (Radios 2, 3 and 4) and Classic FM, and on radio stations in various countries including North America, Canada, Holland, New Zealand and Australia, and video material is featured on many platforms online.
