No history of grime is complete without a passage on Double S. A founding member of the legendary Marvell Crew, Double cut his teeth alongside the likes of Chip and Wretch 32. With Marvell he stormed pirate radio and Channel U, finding fame while still a teenager, and performed in some of the biggest venues in the UK. Now, Double S is back to claim the spotlight. “I’ve got to the stage where I’ve realised if you don’t highlight your successes, no one will do it for you,” Double S says of his return. Known as the ‘flow farda’ since his early days in Marvell, Double laid much of the foundation for grime’s success in the late twenty-teens, taking the genre to venues and audiences that may never have encountered it otherwise. “I know we did something a lot of people didn’t at that time,” Double reflects of Marvell’s arena tour with Britain’s Got Talent winning dance crew Diversity. “We were in front of seven thousand people every night for fourteen days straight, at one stage we said the tour was bigger than us,” he laughs. The same quiet confidence that defined Marvell is what fuels Double S’s new mixtape, The Biggest. A collection of tracks drawn from the last three years of Double’s life, the tape features the likes of Skepta, Mr Eazi and Moelogo, but undoubtedly Double S is the star, his trademark flow and lyrical wit both at their sharpest since the early days of Marvell.
