Old Oaks encompasses the acoustic music of Mount Horeb singer-songwriter Frank Laufenberg. His latest album, The Day Before Yesterday, is a reflection on the past, meant to be understood like a memory that’s on the tip of your tongue. As time goes by, sometimes we catch ourselves reminiscing about yesterday only to realize that the memory is from years past. Other times we find ourselves saying “That was a long time ago...oh wait, that was The Day Before Yesterday.” With this context, the lyrics examine our memories through a pensive lens, paying homage to the people who’ve stuck around through thick and thin while keeping a critical view of the world we live in. The Day Before Yesterday is Old Oaks's first studio release as a full band. Laufenberg’s vocals and 12-string guitar interludes are complemented by moments of ripping saxophone solos and melodic alto flute riffs by Daniel Haschke. The intimate sonic atmosphere is held together by Claire Kannapell’s formidable upright bass and vocal performance. The trio was joined in the studio by drummer Max Morkri to add a tight and groovy feeling. Recorded at Audio for the Arts, The Day Before Yesterday showcases a breadth of musical stylings inspired by jazz, singer-songwriter, Americana, and rock. Frank, Daniel and Max also play with the Madison Funk Fusion band Wurk.
