Formed in Washington, DC in 2015, Kromanauts have a distinctly diasporic blend of reggae, hip-hop, funk and soul. This is Renegade Music! Leading the crew is frontman Kanjia Kroma. Kanjia and his family left Sierra Leone during the turbulent mid-1990's, and passed through Toronto and several American cities before calling Washington, D.C. home. Among his influences are the pulsating drums, melodies, and dancing of Sierra Leone. The backbone of the Kromanauts band is drummer, Matt Rehfuss, and guitarist, Kush el-Amin, two veterans of the DC music scene who have been friends and bandmates since the early 2000s. As a production team with frontman Kroma, the group form a unique synergy, exploring a wide spectrum of sounds, with an array of world influences. Their music is a journal of their adventures, experiences and encounters along the way, both good and bad. Kromanauts released their debut album, Nothing to Lose, in November 2018, and well as singles and DJ remixes for the title track in 2019. Most recently, Kromanauts released a collaboration with Kool Keith, called Heavyweight Building, in April 2020. On stage, the three piece expanded to six with the inclusion of live bass, keyboards and percussion in 2019. Be sure to catch their unique blend of tropical soul live at a show; you will find their positivity and good vibes infectious.
