Montreal-raised Chewii credits her dad for introducing her to the celebrated artists who would go on to influence her sound, a modern take on the timeless, heartache-imbued soul of smoky jazz bars and smooth-voiced storytellers. Her dad would play vinyls of Aretha Franklin and James Brown on his vintage record player, leaving a young Chewii spellbound and inspired to hear more, deepening her connection to the raw emotion of these classic singers. The Canadian born singer-songwriter spent her early years in New York City jam sessions singing covers of everything from Otis Redding, Ella Fitzgerald to Erykah Badu, Alanis Morisette, and Ray Charles. Eventually, the self-taught artist found her own musical style, writing her first original compositions. Honing her sound over the following years the young artist has garnered critical acclaim for releases including her 2020 EP ‘Black Skin Lullaby’ and singles including ‘State of the Nation’, a powerful call to action in response to the murder of George Floyd and her title track, the heartbreaking single ‘Black Skin Lullaby’ which was accompanied by her equally heart-wrenching visual offering. Kicking off 2021 with ‘Dance Through the Pain’ a collaboration with her longtime partner Govales and Tampa-based producer Loko Velocet, Chewii readies the release of her first single "Soul Holiday" from her upcoming debut album.
