Having received musical training in Verona at the school established by Count Mario Bevilacqua, Leoni acceded to the position of master of the chapel for Vicenza Cathedral in 1588. He held this position intil his death. His compositions were in the vocal genres including sacred as well as secular pieces. Leoni composed in excess of 130 madrigals and several motets, 144 of which survive. The music is characterized by notable contrasts and alternations between solos and instrumental trios. Other characteristics of his music include a simple treatment of harmony, rhythm and melody and restricted movements in the bass lines usually not exceeding 4ths or 5ths. Leoni maintained an understanding of the new movements in music and attempted to express the textual data with which he was confronted through the music. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
