Raised in Yorktown, VA, Free J started making music at the age of thirteen. Music became more than hobby for him at the age of seventeen when he started battle rapping on 103 JAMZ defeating everyone he went against. 
 After graduating from Grafton High school, he moved to Newport News where he kept on developing his craft. Making connections with other local acts and with the help of his friends, he was able to cultivate a small fanbase. Free J released several mixtapes and even secured a feature from DJ Green Lantern on one of his songs. 
 In 2009, he joined the Air Force and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. He used his time in the military to network with his peers and gain financial stability. Free J planned to get his GI Bill and move to California to pursue a career in music. In 2012, he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and moved to California the next day. 
 Some personal issues caused him to take a step back from music for a few years and decide what his career path would be. Free J spent this time going to community colleges and working in IT before traveling to Fiji for three months in 2016. After he returned, he enrolled into San Diego State University by 2017. Once there, Free J joined the Film and Television major in order to connect with like minded individuals with aspirations in the entertainment industry. 
 In 2019, he graduated with a Bachelor's in Film and Television Production and shortly after moved to Los Angeles.
