In 2007, Coin Locker Kid started as a Fayetteville hip-hop trio, influenced by Portishead and Madlib. The ringleader, a boundary-pushing rapper by the name of Devyn Smith, soon parted ways with vocalist Kat Reimers and bassist Dominique "Prinny" Ellis and started making a buzz for himself. He held onto the moniker Coin Locker Kid and ultimately befriended Australian producer Katalyst through MySpace. Through sheer luck or possibly fate, by the age of 21 Smith found himself on the inside track to work alongside his heroes -- on Madlib's label, with Katalyst's friend Geoff Barrow of Portishead -- for a sprawling Stones Throw project called Quakers. In 2011, he contributed vocals to three of the most vital tracks on Quakers' self-titled album, "Russia with Love," "The Beginning," and "Get Live,” and went on to pair up with Katalyst for Deep Impressions. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi
