Tracing a continuous movement and adaptation storyline, Kamal Wilson grew up all over the west coast of California but credits Orange County with his formative years. A city that the average artist wouldn't be quick to claim out of fear of judgment or being perceived as corny, but Kamal is no average artist. Pretending to be from somewhere else would discredit his parents' hard work and dedication to giving him a good life. Beginning his career exploration in sports, a series of injuries left him with plenty of competitive drive and no outlet. That is until he found music as a new target to sprint toward, and since writing his first rap song at only 11 years old, this was a natural transition. At home, the music in circulation mainly consisted of jazz and R&B. The only rap being played was more of the pro-black era of the 90s, so he would have to sneak to listen to anything to the contrary. This clash of ideas gave birth to openness regarding musical genres. This, combined with lots of moving around to different cities, gave Kamal a unique perspective and ability to connect with people from all walks of life while still allowing everyone to be true to themselves. Humans are not one idea or thought. Instead, we are a series of conflicting emotions that can be righteous one moment and carefree or fun loving the next. "The only box I will ever be in is my casket." he proclaims as he reserves the right to explore, reflect, and learn through his music.
