Biography

For more than two decades, Simon Angell (guitar & bass) and Tommy Crane (drums & synths) have been making music with a parade of celebrated band-mates—across jazz, indie rock and experimental music. Working as a duo for the first time, the much-sought-after Montreal-based instrumentalists had their own idea: record days of exploration and improvisation; then transfigure these sessions, applying a full suite of modern production techniques—tempering and reassembling the raw material. Here, Angell & Crane have constructed a sound-space that shudders, shimmers and shatters, weaving together ECM-style jazz, ambient drone, and fervid “no wave” punk. Over six days in studio, they were joined by a small handful of guests—alto saxophonist/flautist Charlotte Greve and singer Sarah Rossy. They amassed whole days of material, painstakingly recorded with as many mics and inputs as they had lines on the board, retaining as much mixing options as possible. The next phase was distilling 40 hours of sound into an album; producing an adventurous, wide-ranging album still filled with hunger and curiosity. You can hear elements from each of their pasts—Angell’s work with his band, the critically-acclaimed Thus Owls, his 15 year tenure alongside Patrick Watson and his background in free improv, studying with Marc Ribot; or Crane’s career as a sought-after improviser in NYC. His solo record Dance Music For All Occasions has garnered him much praise for its innovative blend of genres.
