Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, Matt Hue has not stopped playing the piano since he could reach the keys. Hue has arisen from his ambitious beginnings in local jazz bands and as a bedroom producer into a fully realized singer-songwriter. His debut EP, Slippery When Wet (2020), features sultry grooves and hardy vocal croons that are tailor-made for the bedroom. The EP includes “Silver Lining,” (2020) an introspective cut that showcases Hue’s willingness to get out of his comfort zone, delivering impassioned vocal inflections as he resuscitates memories of a relationship that once was over bouncy and optimistic production. Never forgetting his origins, his mastery of jazz music shines through in consistent bursts, such in the silky keys that drive the sexy duet “Better by the Weekend” (2020), and the contorting keytar solo during the bridge in the eccentric banger “Luna” (2019). The keytar proves to be a staple in Hue’s wheelhouse, the most notable example being the ear-melting outro in Lango’s “Lovetalking,” in which Hue shreds the rare instrument over an ethereal trap instrumental. Despite a chaotic range of influences Matt Hue has begun to find clarity in his rhymes and production, and the future is blindingly bright.
