Biography

L’Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) was founded in 2012 and is made up of some twenty regular musicians, who have been joined to date by more than 150 of the country's finest musicians, a dozen renowned conductors, and the participation of some of the most prestigious international artists. Since its inception, the ONJ has focused its energies on developing a concert program of the highest quality, dedicated to the dissemination of the world's orchestral repertoire of jazz music, while promoting the presentation of Canadian works. ONJ has published three albums based on the commissioned works: Marianne Trudel's Dans la Forêt de ma Mémoire - Opus Prize 2016 Record of the Year Nominee, Christine Jensen's Under the Influence - Opus Prize 2018 Record of the Year Winner - and Jean-Nicolas Trottier's The Mystic Mind - Opus Prize 2020 Record of the Year Nominee. The ONJ also won the Opus Award 2018 - Concert of the Year - under the direction of drummer and composer John Hollenbeck, featuring singer Theo Bleckmann at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. By the end of 2021, the ONJ will have given more than 70 concerts, performing more than 600 works from the repertoire of over 70 national and international composers and arrangers.
