Walker Pickens

Biography

Hailing originally from the central TX musical wellspring of Wimberley, TX, Walker Pickens writes introspective, observational songs on the human condition as he sees it--sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always strange. Pickens released his homespun debut self-titled record in May 2015, produced by Patrick Brooks and Ron Flynt at Jumping Dog Studios in Austin, TX. The album featured a who's who of local TX talent, including Grammy-award winner Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks), Brennen Leigh (two time Texas Music Awards Best Female Vocalist winner), and Rich Brotherton (Robert Earl Keen). Anchored by lead single and love-in-progress manifesto "Wraparound Porch," the album garnered local radio play and landed Pickens opening slots for the likes of perennial Austin favorite Bob Schneider and Nathan Hamilton. After the Texan songwriter's obligatory move to Nashville, he released his crowd-funded sophomore album "What To Do With Love When Love Is Done" in 2017. The album, which he co-produced with Nick Bullock at his Awake Studios in Nashville, found Pickens exploring alt-rock sounds outside the traditional country toolbox. Synth-driven lead single "She's Gonna Live" channels The War On Drugs, Petty, and Springsteen in equal measure, chronicling a young woman's cross-country search for purpose in the midst of the Great Recession of the late aughts. Pickens is now back in central TX, and hard at work on his third full-length record, Weather Rock, coming summer 2020.
