Growing up in an Islamic household, sneaking snippets of worldly music into her household was close to pulling off a major heist during Kameelah’s early years. She was introduced to the world of sound from early hip-hop, house music and the live bands of the 80's courtesy of her older sister. Along with tribal and island music that her mother played. Kameelah was encouraged to consider song writing as a career option when she received an opportunity to write for Bunny Sigler of Philadelphia International Records. Moving forward Kameelah reached back into her roots of house music via her days of spectating on the Philadelphia ballroom scene and transformed her bold releases such as ‘Holding On’, ‘America the Beautiful’ (North Street West & Bruise remixes + video) and more recently, Kameelah’s debut on Defected Records working with Beyonce collaborator and international DJ + producer, Honey Dijon. In Kameelah’s own words, “In the clubs, I would stand by the speakers just to experience the vibration rumble under my feet and rise up through my whole being edging me back towards my path to make music. I began to use my music to transform young people, helping them build the capacity to push through trauma to look in the mirror of potential fearlessly. That is what I want others to receive from a 'Kameelah Waheed' experience. Pushing them to let go and encouraging them to inspire others to let go and just be”.
