Biography

Munich-based electronic producer Bryan Müller creates bright, jagged music as SCNTST, constantly shifting in style and approach and encompassing genres including house, techno, trap, hip-hop, disco edits, and ambient electronics. His other predominant pseudonym is Skee Mask, who has a far more focused sound, taking the atmosphere of techno and pairing it with forward-thinking drum patterns. SCNTST, however, began making straight-forward electro-house, before releasing a debut album, 2013's Self Therapy, which switched genres track-to-track with a buoyant energy stitching it all together. His second record as SCNTST, 2015's Puffer, took on a more ambient bent, while intervening EPs experimented with numerous off-kilter production styles. Müller was raised in a small village just outside of Munich, where he played in several bands and even performed in a musical stage production. By 2010 he had taught himself to use Ableton, almost immediately putting together tracks in his bedroom. On a whim, Müller connected with Boys Noize through social media, impressing him enough that he signed him to his eponymous label. In under a year he had released his debut single, "Monday," for Boys Noize, but it wasn't until his debut album, 2013's Self Therapy, that his sound blossomed. After the album's release, Müller hit a prolific streak with the release of two EPs, Forever 16 and Keep on Giving, on top of a mixtape titled F.Y.A. Although much of the material was created during his early experiments as a producer, they varied vastly and drew comparisons to the likes of J Dilla and Flying Lotus. In 2014 he added another notch to his belt by anonymously creating the Skee Mask alias. His second moniker resonated with the Zenker Brothers, going on to release cerebral techno on their label Ilian Tape. The following year, SCNTST took another left turn by releasing Puffer, his second full-length which consisted of mostly ambient cuts. In the three years after Puffer, there was a distinct focus on Skee Mask material, including a debut album, 2016's Shred, and a string of EPs on Ilian Tape. In 2018 his output dovetailed, with a full-length album arriving from both aliases within weeks of each other; Scenes and Sketches from the Lab was SCNTST's third album, while the critically acclaimed Compro was Skee Mask's second, marking the release of 13 EPs and five albums from both aliases in an eight-year period. ~ Liam Martin, Rovi
