Debonair District is a unique Manila-based jazz sextet that adapts various Filipino and foreign repertoire into the jazz idiom. Formed in June 2016, these alumni from the University of the Philippines College of Music decided to form a group together after realizing that they had similar tastes in jazz music. What inspired them is the ability to explore and share different textural sounds and techniques of the genre while applying it into their own compositions, arrangements, and performances, most especially in Filipino folk songs, kundiman pieces, traditional music, and OPM. Part of Debonair District’s advocacy is to promote Filipino folk songs, traditional instrumental music, and kundiman pieces into original contemporary jazz arrangements, allowing the young and the young-at-heart to appreciate these timeless compositions. Through this, Debonair District is lauded for its uniqueness of its promotion of the country’s cultural identity. Debonair District has been active in the local music scene: being invited to play in music festivals, collaborations, bar gigs, private events, and wedding ceremonies. They have been receiving high praise for their unique kind of music and they are taking themselves to the next level by partnering with Warner Music Philippines. Debonair District aims to obtain a wide reach of their audience to share their love and passion in performing their music not only within the country, but also to the world.
