Cymin Samawatie is a singer, conductor, and composer of contemporary music. She gained international reputation with her ensemble Cyminology, whose latest three albums were released with the Munich-based record label ECM. In 2013, she co-founded the Trickster Orchestra, which she co-directs with Ketan Bhatti. Here, she blends composition, improvisation, and mimesis to unite superb soloists in a collective of trans-traditional avant-garde music that incorporates traditions and instruments from Europe, Western, Central, and East Asia as well as younger instruments such as electronics. In her compositions, Cymin Samawatie blends impressionist colors of sound with the vibrancy of contemporary jazz. She combines new composition structures with chamber music, free improvisation and minimalism with Persian poetry from the 12th to the 21th centuries. As a solo singer, she collaborated with Bobby McFerrin, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Martin Stegner, Frank Möbus, Korhan Erel, Roger Willemsen, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Pro Artibus, as well as with the Iranian band Kamakân.
